Chapter 17

Block called Captain Adams every week for an update, but no one had heard from or seen Nikole for months. Block had even hired a private investigator to find Nikole, but he couldn’t locate her either. Block had almost given up hope of finding Nikole when Bella burst into the room.

“She’s been spotted!” Bella announced, causing Block to knock over his coffee and instantly stand behind his desk. “China’s been spotted in her old neighborhood, visiting her gang-banging brother.”

“Oh yeah?” Block responded faintly, hoping it would be news of Nikole. Overall, though, it was good news to him, and he would be happy to take care of at least one of the disloyal bitches. “Give me the address, and I’ll take it from here,” he told Bella as he picked up the phone from his desk.

A few minutes later, two heavily armed men were headed out to China’s brother’s apartment in the Greenbriar Mall area of Atlanta. As they pulled up in front of the apartment, they double-checked the door number against the number on the small strip of paper they were given. They shut off the engine of the old beat-up Chevy and casually headed to Apartment 209. Just as they were about to knock, they noticed the door was already ajar. Before entering the apartment, they pulled their guns and put on ski masks. Seeing no signs of life in the front room, they moved through the apartment with caution. Before they reached the kitchen, a lanky young boy with braids, talking on a cell phone, walked straight into their path. The boy was totally caught off guard by the two men, who instantly rushed him. As they pinned him to the ground, they inquired about China’s location.

“Hey, man, I swear, I don’t know nothing!” the lanky boy screamed as the two hulking men in ski masks and all black held him down with a gun pointed at his nose.

“Where is China?” one of the masked men asked again in a calm voice.

“Man, I don’t—“

Before the boy could answer, the pistol connected with the side of his face, breaking his jaw. “I’m going to ask you again. Where is China?” the masked man demanded in a firm voice this time.

“Look here, lil buddy. Just tell us where China’s at, and we’re out of here, but as long as you play dumb, we’re gonna keep punishing you,” the second man snapped.

“Look, man, I don’t—“

Slap! The second man slapped the young boy, causing severe pain to shoot down the side of his face.

“Wa… wait!” the boy slurred as blood trickled down the side of his mouth.

“Speak!” the first masked man barked.

“I… I… I can… call her,” he said as his eyes began to water.

“Now we’re getting somewhere,” the first man said, placing his gun back in his waistband.

The second masked man reached over and grabbed the boy’s cell phone off the floor where it had landed next to his baseball cap. Both men watched in silence as he dialed his sister’s number.
